APPLICATION OF PLASTIC DESIGN METHOD IN STEEL STRUCTURES
After reviewing the historical development of the Plastic design method the writer presents bases for the design of simple frame structures according to the theory of plasticity. She describes various methods of calculating, and their respecitive advantages. The most important prectical instances are shown by examples. The plastic design method renders possible the simplest and quickest
calculus of statically indeterminate structures. It also provides a clearer idea of the behaviour of steel structures and offers considerable economic advantages. The saving in material amounts to from 15 to 30 percent. The plastic design method is already successfully applied to simple framed structures (200 single-storey buildings in Britain alone). Great attention must be paid to stability and design problems; and further research regarding the plastic design method is necessary in order to translate it into practice as much as possible.
