THE TRAGEDY IN VAJONT

Summary
On the 9th October a land-slip, containing 50 cu. hm. of stones, broke down into the artificial lake at dam over Vajont, a tributary of the river Piave in the north of Italy. The resulting flood destroyed a town, i. e. Longerone and some villages. Over 2000 persons lost their lives there. The dam Vajont, which stood the catastrophe, is with its height of 261.60 m. the highest world arch dam, comprising 360.000 cu. m. of concrete, making a lake, containing 150 cu. hm. of usable accumulation. It is a link in the large Piave— Boite—Mae—Vajont hydro-electric power plant system which includes 6 large arch dams and several power stations. By means of a 27 km. long inlet channel and
2 siphons it concentrates available water quantities in the cavern Power Station Soverzene powered with 220 MW and with a 783 KWh yearly output. The catastrophe left the collector filled up with earth, consequently in accordance with the decree of Ministry it won’t be used any more as a link in a power station system. The collector enabled a very rational consumption of water, therefore the value of complete system will be rather reduced now. A committee, appointed by the Italian government will have the task to make a severe investigation on the causes of this catastrophe, one of the most terrible catastrophes in the history of modern Italy.
